Land and Freedom
Spanish and English, downloading a subtitles program a good idea. Land and Freedom, British director Ken Loach's film about the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, says something quite different. It says that the present state of affairs was not inevitable, and that the working class is capable of uplifting and liberating itself. It says further that the cause of the failure of the Soviet Union lay not with socialism, but Stalinism. |

After conducting a criminal investigation, as well as verifying that Germany would honor its military alliance, Austria-Hungary issued a formal letter to the government of Serbia. The letter reminded Serbia of its commitment to respect the Great Powers' decision regarding Bosnia-Herzegovina, and to maintain good neighborly relations with Austria Hungary. The letter also contained specific demands aimed at destroying the funding and operation of terrorist organizations which arguably had perpetrated the Sarajevo outrage.
Serbian reservists being transported on tramp steamers on the Danube, apparently accidentally, crossed on to the Austro-Hungarian side of the river at Temes-Kubin and Austro-Hungarian soldiers fired into the air to warn them off. This incident was blown out of proportion and Austria-Hungary then declared war and mobilized its army on July 28, 1914. Under the Secret Treaty of 1892 Russia and France were obligated to mobilize their armies if any of the triplice mobilized and soon all the Great Powers except Italy had chosen sides and gone to war.
It could be argued that this assassination set in train most of the major events of the 20th century, with its reverberations lingering into the 21st. The Treaty of Versailles at the end of the First World War is generally linked to the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II. It also led to the success of the Russian Revolution, which helped lead to the Cold War. This, in turn, led to many of the major political developments of the twentieth century, such as the fall of the colonial empires and the rise of the United States and the USSR to super-power status.
However, if the assassination had not occurred, it is very possible that European war would have still have erupted, triggered by another event at another time. The alliances noted above and the existence of vast and complex mobilization plans that were almost impossible to reverse once put in motion made war on a huge scale increasingly likely from the beginning of the twentieth century.

Spanish Civil War battle scenes
The Spanish Civil War is an often forgotten conflict in Europe, This war was not only a bloodbath for the population, it also was a testing ground for weapons and tactics that would be used in the Second World War. This conflict has marked several generations of Spaniards and still creates tensions today. The Spanish Civil War as all civil wars was a tradegy and should be taken as a lesson that dialogue and compromise should always be an option. plz enjoy... bertiebuns@hotmail.com |
World at War (Part II) (1942)
Portrayal of the steps that led up to Pearl Harbor and total mobilization of World War II. Very well put together history of the events leading up to the war using mostly news archives from the US, and as well from other news organizations. This has a lot of footage you've seen before, (aka the taking over of Germany, Pearl Harbor) and some you havent (Whoa! I never knew the Nazi Party had a rally in NYC, In Madison Square Garden no less!!) so some of it is quite fascinating. The first half is better than the second half, which is, excuse the term, a bit pedestrian. And there's some rather spotty editing, not too sure if it's splices or what, but some scenes are badly put together. But still, amazing footage! A feature length motion picture presenting step-by-step the events which led up to Pearl Harbor and total war. History, filmed as it happened, shows the massacre of Ethiopia, the invasion of Austria and Czechoslovakia, the blitz of Poland, the tragic fall of France. Material was taken from secret government archives. Keyword: pearl, harbor, harbour, america, world, war, 2, II, 1942, japan, england, birtain, hitler, czechoslovakia, germany, blitz, blitzkreig, russia, poland, polish, german, nazi, austria, britain, allies, axis, soviet, union, UK. |

The Occult History of the Third Reich Adolf Hitler
Four volume documentary set ("Adolph Hitler", "The SS Blood and Soil", "The Enigma of the Swastika", and "Himmler The Mystic") containing mainly B&W as well as some color archival footage, with narration explaining the influences of alternative belief systems (occult, paganism, mysticism, etc) on the Nazi ideology and Hitler's personal philosophy. Also documents the history and development of the ideas and symbols that would be used along with eugenicist racial politics to perpetrate the murder and oppression of millions during World War II. The Great Battle on the Volga (1962)
Produced in the Soviet Union in 1962, this documentary compiles the work of 50 Soviet combat photographers, who filmed the battle of Stalingrad, one of the great turning points in the Second World War. Because this was made in the Khrushchev era, the documentary avoids references to Stalin and Stalingrad. |

Remembrance
Sung By: John Mc.Dermott--(Green Fields of France) Remembrance Day (Australia, Canada, Colombia, UK and Ireland), also known as Poppy Day (South Africa and Malta), and Armistice Day (UK, New Zealand and many other Commonwealth countries; and the original name of the holiday internationally) is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I and other wars. It is observed on November 11 to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. The observance is specifically dedicated to members of the armed forces who were killed during war, and was created by King George V of the United Kingdom on November 7, 1919, possibly upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey though Wellesley Tudor Pole established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917. The most notable armistice, and the one which is still meant when people say simply "The Armistice", is the armistice at the end of World War I, on November 11, 1918 at the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." Armistice Day is still celebrated in some places on the anniversary of that armistice; alternatively November 11, or a Sunday near to it, may still be observed as a Remembrance Day. Veterans Day is the American name for the international day called Armistice Day. It falls on 11 November, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War One. It is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states. The same day is observed elsewhere as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. All major hostilities of World War 1 were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. Armistice Day was first commemorated in the United States by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, and many states made it a legal holiday. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 inviting all Americans to observe the day, and made it a legal holiday nationwide in 1938. The holiday has been observed annually on November 11 since that date - first as Armistice Day, later as Veterans Day - except for a brief period when it was celebrated on the fourth Monday of October. |

History Channel presents:Tora, Tora, Tora: The True Story of Pearl Harbor
The History Channel goes in-depth with this two-volume documentary Tora, Tora, Tora: The True Story of Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1941, was a tragic and surprising day for the United States. The attack on the Hawaiian island was a costly and sudden invitation to enter World War II. Archival footage and interviews make up the bulk of this release. Both American and Japanese remembrances are included for a complete history lesson. The series begins with the events leading up to the attack, especially concentrating on Admiral Yamamoto's detailed plans. Using personal testimony, the History Channel re-creates the frantic action on the ground as American soldiers scrambled for safety. Some, such as those aboard the U.S.S. Arizona, had no time to retaliate. The program concludes with a real-life reunion of soldiers from both sides. From inception to aftermath, Tora, Tora, Tora: The True Story of Pearl Harbor provides a thorough account of a day that will always live in the memory of a nation. ~ Sarah Ing, All Movie Guide. |
